How to Generate Referrals Automatically

Automated referral generation sends a referral ask to satisfied customers 2–3 weeks after job completion — after the review request, when the positive experience has had time to settle and they've likely mentioned it in conversation. The ask includes a clear referral incentive and a simple way to refer (a link or a name to pass on).

The referral sequence sits after the review sequence in the post-job customer journey. Review at 48–72 hours, referral ask at 2–3 weeks. By the 2-week mark, satisfied customers have typically had one or two social interactions where their recent home improvement or service experience came up naturally. The referral ask arrives when they're primed to respond.

The message structure: acknowledge the job, thank them for their business, mention the review if they left one, and then ask directly: 'If you know anyone who could use [service], we'd love to help them out — and we'll give you [incentive] for any job that comes through.' Short, direct, personal.

Referral incentives: cash credits to their next service invoice are the most effective ($25–$50 for residential services). Gift cards are second. Verbal-only asks with no incentive convert at much lower rates than incentivised asks, but still better than no ask at all. The incentive amount should reflect the value of a referred job — for businesses where an average job is $1,500–$5,000, a $50 referral credit is a low cost for acquisition.

Common questions

No — it can be as informal as a personalised text asking for referrals with a thank-you credit offered. Formal programs with tracking codes and referral portals are more scalable but require more setup. For most service businesses, an automated personal text with a simple incentive is sufficient.
